Some hotels impress you immediately. Others reveal themselves slowly.
Blackberry Farm is the latter.
Set against the foothills of Tennessee’s Great Smoky Mountains, it is polished without feeling precious, luxurious without ever losing its sense of place. There are rolling pastures, winding roads, gardens, streams, and the sort of quiet that makes you instinctively slow down.
We went as a multigenerational family, which turned out to be one of the best ways to experience it.
Rather than staying in individual rooms, we chose one of Blackberry Farm’s private homes. For a family spanning generations, it was ideal: everyone had their own space, but mornings and evenings still together. There was no coordinating who was meeting where or at what time. We simply came home.
We visited in July, yet each evening we lit a wood-burning fire on our screened porch. Summer in Tennessee, everyone gathered around a fire, surrounded by the Smoky Mountains — does it get more Americana than that?
A Place That Lets You Set the Pace
There is plenty to do at Blackberry Farm, but the property never makes you feel as though you should be doing any of it.
One morning might mean fly-fishing; another, exploring the working farm. There is swimming, time at the spa, and acres of property to wander. Children can spend the day outside while adults disappear for a treatment or linger over lunch.
That’s part of what makes Blackberry Farm work so well across generations. Everyone can experience the property differently and still come together throughout the day.
Couples shouldn’t overlook it, either. Remove the family element and it becomes an entirely different kind of escape with quiet mornings, long meals, spa treatments, and very little reason to leave the property.
Come Hungry
Food isn’t an amenity at Blackberry Farm. It’s part of the reason to come.
As a Relais & Châteaux property, there is a seriousness to the culinary program that elevates the entire experience while remaining deeply connected to the farm and its surroundings.
Dinner at The Barn is essential.
The setting, service, and food make it an occasion rather than simply another hotel dinner. One detail families should know in advance: The Barn is reserved for adults and the menus change daily at the restaurants.
Farm or Mountain?
One distinction worth understanding before booking: Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain are sister properties, but they aren’t interchangeable.
Blackberry Farm is the more pastoral of the two. Food, the farm, wellness, and leisurely days define the rhythm.
Blackberry Mountain is geared more toward travelers who want activity to be central to the trip, with greater emphasis on hiking, outdoor pursuits, and the surrounding mountain landscape.
Neither is inherently better. The question is how you want to spend your days.
When to Go
Blackberry Farm is one of those rare properties where the season meaningfully changes the experience.
Summer means long days, swimming, outdoor activities, and evenings cool enough that we were still lighting fires on the porch in July. But fall may be Blackberry Farm at its most iconic. The Smoky Mountains turn, temperatures drop, fireplaces take over, and the entire property settles into the season. That experience comes with a caveat: plan early.
If your vision is Blackberry Farm at peak fall foliage, this isn’t a trip to leave until a few months before departure. The most desirable autumn dates can require planning a year ahead.
There is nothing particularly trendy about it. It doesn’t need to reinvent itself each season. The pleasure is in traditions that feel increasingly difficult to find elsewhere: a house full of family, exceptional food, days spent outdoors, and a fire burning on the porch at night.
Sometimes it’s finding a place that reminds you why the classics endure.
